The delivery of this book was prompt and exceeded my expectations

I've been fortunate to have experienced the TPS up close, in US as well as Japanese factories, and Dr. Southwick has it exactly right when he makes his comparisons to the medical arena in Critically Ill. Toyota and other companies such as GE, Wal-Mart and Boeing have had great success using this process across all platforms, most notably in production, engineering, logistics and materials/sourcing. Critically Ill makes several convincing arguments for the high expectation of improvements in reliability, quality and customer service in the health care delivery field as well.For example, Dr. Southwick's analysis of the changes necessary in leadership, teamwork and organization structure as well as the methods to bring about these quantum changes (Chapter 4) are particularly compelling. Apart from the obvious financial incentives for doing so, he makes an extremely solid case for what should be significant reductions in medical errors; shorter hospital stays due to better initial work-ups; and substantially better teamwork in early problem solving. All of this is something I would expect every hospital administrator would be openly embracing in the current age of ObamaCare.And in the middle of all the medical "stuff" the good doctor takes time to tell us about an often overlooked and under-appreciated historical figure (Samuel Adams) and why his leadership was vital to our start as a Nation and applicable to the leadership we need today. The book is worth the price for that segment alone.

Critically Ill is a must read for anyone involved in health care. It's an honest look at the complex and risky world of health care in the United States. Dr. Southwick clearly illustrates how skilled physicians, nurses, medical technicians, and care givers, with the best of intentions and motives, practice in a multidimensional and multifaceted health care system that often and unintentionally creates an unsafe healing environment. His suggestions and recommendations are solid and I applaud his honest examination of a flawed and sometimes risky system that hurts when it intends to heal.
