A decent collection of Luther's prayers, which I have found helpful and inspiring. A few points, however.1) The cover shown is not the same as the cover on the book I received.2) While the paper is acid free, the printing seems to have been photo-copied over and over. It's blurry.3) There is no citation as to where any prayer came from, i.e., which edition of Luther's works, whether originally in German or Latin.4) While this edition was published by Augsburg in 1994, it is a reprint of a book by a different publisher published in 1967.5) After all, these prayers were composed in the sixteenth century so they sound a little antiquated.
After viewing "Luther" starring Stacey Keach, I was so much more impressed with this courageous man of God (especially being from a Catholic background)...so I ordered this prayer book. I am very touched with Luther's directness in praise, thankfulness, confession and petitioning. I did order an additional two copies to be given away as gifts in which I have already had great reviews from these people. I would recommend Luther's Prayers to everyone - a great 'non-denominational' gift. I will continue to give this as a gift.
These prayers are very good! They remind you of God's mercy and each prayer is a good way to "start" out with when you begin praying to help you focus.
I am a latecomer to Lutheranism. This book of prayers is very good for me. A pastor said we really need to learn "how to pray". I thought that was not necessary for me but got the book anyhow. Now I find the prayers speak what is relevant to me. Helps me focus on and look at my needs but also on praising and honoring as I should do but so often left out of my former praying.
This was recommended to me by a friend as a great quiet time book. My husband really enjoys meditating on Luther's prayers. It's helpful to not just read instruction, but to actually have prayers modeled for you... especially when you don't know how or what to pray.
As a Christian, this book gets at my heart like few do. I think it is because of Luther's profound grasp of scripture and of the struggle that goes on in the Christian's heart. He is very honest about his struggles and that frees us up to admit ours.
