Kindergarten-Grade 3–Winter chronicles the life of the first Latina Supreme Court justice, from her childhood in the Bronx to her historic nomination. The tone is upbeat from its opening line: You never know what can happen. Sotomayor certainly had a lot of obstacles to overcome: poverty, juvenile diabetes, and the death of her father when she was nine. But Winter clearly identifies hard work, determination, and a loving extended family as the keys to her success. The author is honest about how her socioeconomic background sometimes made her feel alienated at Princeton University. The emphasis, though, is on her ability to thrive like a flowering vine that would not stop growing. Images of flowers blooming unify the text and the illustrations. Rodriguez's warm yellows and oranges also underscore the optimism of Winter's text. Moreover, the variety of media used (pastel, acrylic, spray paint, and oil-based paints) perfectly echoes the rich textures of Sotomayor's life. The Spanish translation is excellent and makes the book accessible to Latino families. But Winter lets the small details convey the drama, which is amplified in the mixed-media illustrations in warm shades of red and brown. Growing up with her loving, single-parent mom in a family that surrounded Sonia “like a warm blanket,†Sotomayor was a big reader as a child and wanted to be Nancy Drew. After being diagnosed with diabetes, she had to learn to accept her physical limits, but she graduated at the top of her high-school class and then at the top of her Princeton class. She felt different from her privileged classmates, and kids of all backgrounds will recognize the universal emotions and experiences of trying to fit in. Beautiful, charming, highly detailed writing (in English and Spanish). I bought it for a fourth grader Hispanic friend of mine, a little girl, and she was enthralled. She seemed very interested to finally learn what this "Supreme Court thing" was all about. She seemed to think it was some sort of government agency. Got that straightened out!
This is a wonderful true story that all young children and parents could benefit from reading: a strong, mature, young parent faces many obstacles but never loses sight of the goals she has for her children (she is a model mother that we need more of in our society, where young parents are often self-absorbed in partying, cell phones, fashion and just themselves).To me, the story says so much about - without saying it at all - how the examples parents set influence the choices their children make. As we watch Sonia grow up and become a strong, determined young women, it is her mother's ever present selflessness and guidance that make it all possible.
Justice of the Supreme Court Sonia Sotomayor was featured in a recent 60 Minutes segment, visiting her old neighborhood in The Bronx, New York, where people called greetings to her from second-story apartment windows in Spanish and she warmly replied. She wasn't born to money or privilege--far from it--and she didn't expect her diabetes to let her live this long; but she studied hard, worked hard, and didn't let anything stop her. It's an inspiring story. By the way, I bought the book as a gift for a 13-year-old girl, but it's also been helpful to me in refreshing the Spanish I learned in school.
This is a great inspirational book for kids. It talks about Sonia Sotomayour's childhood who lived without much resources e.g.being raised by a single parent, had certain health conditions like diabetes, lived in a poor neighborhood, but rose to great heights in life.
Love the dual language, and telling the story about a love of reading. Great bedtime story for my 6yo.

This story is well told and the book is well illustrated. It sends a message about the importance of working hard, studying hard, and loving your family. It does not get into specific case rulings or politics. It addresses diversity very well.
The historic appointment of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor is an inspiration to many people. Whether one is Hispanic, a woman, a diabetic or someone who has struggled against difficult challenges, Sotomayor is someone to admire. This lovely bi-lingual beautifully illustrated book presents her childhood and family in an enjoyable way that parents/grownups can read with children. Many books offer life lessons but few can point to such a wonderful and friendly real life person who inspires a love of learning and family. Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor has spoken at many group functions and enjoys speaking with young people. She makes an effort to walk among the audience as opposed to lecturing from above. She has made repeated visits to her grammar school and has inspired many to continue lifelong learning. This book is a keeper and one I hope to read to the young people in my life in both Spanish and English.
